Lecture “Technology and Science at Sea: The Tools We Use to Study Cetaceans” by Joana Castro, Association for Research in the Marine Environment
In the lecture “Technology and Science at Sea: The Tools We Use to Study Cetaceans”, we will explore the fascinating world of cetaceans and the various scientific techniques that allow researchers to study these animals in their natural habitat. From non-invasive methods such as photo-identification, which uses images to identify individuals and track their movements over time, to acoustics, which allows us to hear and decipher sounds emitted by dolphins and whales.
During the session, we also discussed more invasive methods, such as taking biopsies for genetic and health analysis, which provide valuable information on the state of conservation of populations. Finally, we address new technologies, such as the use of drones that have revolutionized marine research, allowing us to study cetaceans from an aerial perspective and in high definition, without direct contact. This lecture offers an overview of the tools and challenges that science and technology pose for the protection and understanding of cetaceans.
