Eduardo Arroyo - A Painted Biography
In its 25th anniversary year, the Cascais Cultural Centre is presenting Uma Biografia Pintada (A Painted Biography), an exhibition dedicated to Eduardo Arroyo - one of the most prominent names in 20th century Spanish art, renowned for challenging conventions over six decades of tireless and multifaceted artistic production. The exhibition, promoted by the D. Luís I Foundation and Cascais City Council, is part of the Bairro dos Museus program and will be on display between June 7 and September 7.
The work of Eduardo Arroyo (Madrid, 1937-2018) combines biting social criticism with a vibrant visual language. With an unmistakable figurative style, he addresses both the politics of an era and popular culture, while giving the art autobiographical contours. Arroyo's artistic practice encompasses painting, sculpture, scenography and illustration, and is marked by bright colors and a strong symbolic charge.
Curated by Marisa Oropesa, the exhibition at the Cascais Cultural Center presents part of Eduardo Arroyo's painted biography. This expression, coined by the artist himself, defines the artist's relationship with painting: “In fact, painting is an autobiographical process. You're constantly painting your life... there's undoubtedly a very close relationship with everyone's life. It's a painted biography.”
The works featured in Eduardo Arroyo - A Painted Biography come from private collections and important Spanish institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Villanueva de los Infantes and the Colección Azcona.
