“Papa Haydn's Clock,” performed by OCCO—the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra
The composers Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, despite the age difference between them, cultivated a friendship marked by mutual respect and admiration. Both were accomplished violinists.
Mozart’s violin concertos are indispensable in any violinist’s repertoire.
The young Mozart’s deep respect for Haydn’s stature and importance was evident when he dedicated the quartets he wrote at age 17 to him.
For his part, Haydn considered Mozart “the finest composer known by name and for his art of composition.”
Thanks to his amiable character and the significance of his work, Haydn was nicknamed “Papa Haydn” by many young musicians—a term also used by Mozart himself.
The “Clock” Symphony received this title because, in the second movement, the rhythmic repetition mimics the “tick-tock” of a clock.
This concert also features violinist and composer Josef Boulogne.
