European Heritage Days: People of the Cape – Lighthouse Keepers of the South-West Algarve
The documentary “Gentes do Cabo” is the result of research and the collection of memories from former lighthouse keepers. Although it takes the Cape St Vincent Lighthouse in Sagres as its starting point, the film goes beyond this specific location, giving a voice to the lighthouse keepers and their families, as well as to their professional journeys, marked by a nomadic life along the Portuguese coast.
During their careers, these professionals served at various lighthouses, from the north to the south of the country, building up a body of experience deeply rooted in the maritime environment, constant mobility and the particular demands of this profession.
The film focuses on the daily lives of the lighthouse keepers, their work experiences and the intimate relationship between the lighthouses, the communities that lived there and the sea. Through personal accounts and memories, a sensitive portrait is painted of a role characterised by responsibility, adaptability and a strong connection to the coastal environment.
