Description

The history of Cascais is deeply marked by the decision of King Luis to settle in the Cidadela Palace so as to be near his beloved sea from the 1870s onwards.

The Royal family then starts to spend its summers in Cascais with the aristocracy soon also choosing the destination for their summer season place of residence, with the ensuing result of Cascais becoming the Royal Town.

The so-called “summer architecture” then begins to develop and, with its villas, small palaces and chalets, begins to leave an imprint on the urban layout of the town.

The objective of this guide is to introduce the most representative examples of this very architecture to all those who visit Cascais.
