Atlantic Cliffs Adventure
Now in its sixth year, the Atlantic Cliffs Adventure is a trail running event set in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, one of the most striking stretches of coastline near Lisbon. It is organised every year by the local club União Recreativa da Charneca.
The race has become a classic on the Portuguese trail running calendar. Runners tackle the legendary climb to Peninha, a hilltop chapel and viewpoint in the Sintra hills, and follow the hanging valleys that drop towards the Atlantic along the Cascais coast.
Along the way, participants pass through traditional “saloio” villages, the old farming communities of the Lisbon countryside: Charneca, Malveira da Serra/Almoinhas Velhas, Biscaia and Figueira do Guincho.
There are two competitive races, the Long Trail K20 and the Short Trail K10, plus a non-competitive walk for those who simply want to enjoy the scenery. All routes are circular and start and finish at União Recreativa da Charneca.
Back at the finish line, the village of Charneca welcomes every participant in true local style, with a bowl of traditional hot soup.
Long Trail K20: competitive race on a 20 km circular route, starting and finishing at União Recreativa da Charneca.
Short Trail K10: competitive race on a 10 km circular route, starting and finishing at União Recreativa da Charneca.
Walk: a relaxed, non-competitive walk on the 10 km route.
