Tribute Concert to Prof. José António Piñeiro Nagy
The OCCO – Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra pays tribute to Professor José António Piñeiro Nagy, one of the leading figures in Portuguese classical music, with a concert at the Auditório Senhora da Boa Nova in Estoril.
Professor Piñeiro Nagy founded the Estoril Festival (later the Estoril Lisbon Festival), the Estoril International Summer Courses and the Estoril Performance Competition. Together these initiatives shaped musical life in Portugal and helped train several generations of musicians.
He was also one of the founders of the Lisbon Higher School of Music and played a key role in the years before the OCCO was created. When conductor Nikolay Lalov approached him with a proposal, he made the first concerts of the Estoril Ensemble possible. That group later became today's Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra.
The programme pairs works by Portuguese composers Joly Braga Santos, Armando Mota, Artur Caldeira and Luís de Freitas Branco with pieces by Astor Piazzolla and Tchaikovsky. The concert is conducted by Nikolay Lalov and António Saiote, who also performs as clarinet soloist.
Admission is free, but seats must be reserved in advance.
