Description

As Cascais celebrates its year as European Capital of Democracy, join a guided walk through Parede, the seaside town between Lisbon and Cascais that became one of the area's leading centres of republican ideas in the early 20th century.

It was here, in 1908, that the Republican Committee of the Municipality of Cascais was founded. And it was from Parede, on 5 October 1910, the day the monarchy fell and Portugal became a republic, that a procession set off to carry the news to Cascais.

This walk takes in the places, memories and people behind Parede's role in the republican history of Cascais, and offers a closer look at the roots of Portuguese democracy.

Guided by Helena Gonรงalves Pinto. The tour is on foot.

Meeting point: Praรงa 5 de Outubro, Parede (next to Parede railway station).

Suitable for ages 10 and over.

Free of charge, but advance registration is required: https://cultura.cascais.pt/webform/roteiros-do-patrimonio-concelhio-parede-republicana-0
