Opera “The Unicorn’s Ring”
From October 22 to 25, the Carlos Avilez Auditorium, located in the Cruzeiro Building, will present the opera “O Anel do Unicórnio,” with music by Martim Sousa Tavares and directed by Rita Calçada Bastos. The various performances are aimed at schools and families.
The initiative is part of the celebrations for World Opera Day (October 25) and reflects an important aspect of Cascais Ópera’s work: bringing opera to new audiences and fostering a close connection with this art form from an early age. While retaining the original libretto, written by Ana Lázaro in 2021 with music by Martim Sousa Tavares, this new production draws on the same story to create a completely fresh experience.
Pedro Patê, a young man fed up with his unusual luck—the son of two opera singers—lives inside an opera that never ends, accompanied by the background music of an orchestra that dictates his every move.
Fed up with this situation—or with being dragged into epic adventures, intrigues, and shenanigans by his father Bellini Bel Canto, a former barber in Seville, and his mother Faustina Balão, a true Baroque diva—Pedro dreams of becoming a magician and discovering the trick that will silence his family’s singing with just a snap of his fingers!
Until one day, when Faustina Balão’s pet cat, Don Giovanni al Latte, mysteriously disappears—precisely on the day they’re celebrating their silver wedding anniversary.
After all, in the opera, there are no limits to the unexpected!
